Practica & Internships

The purpose of applied training in the Applied Social Psychology Program is to provide students with field experience emphasizing the integration of social psychological theory, research, and practice in accordance with the ethical and professional standards of CPA. Students are responsible for conducting an applied project within an organization or agency under faculty supervision. These projects allow students to apply what they have learned in their graduate courses to the field setting and will facilitate further development of skills from the following core areas: theory skills, research skills and methods, and practice skills (including communication, interpersonal, and consultation skills). This experiential learning component has proven to be of great value to graduates in obtaining employment within a competitive job market. We have worked with a wide variety of organizations in the public, not- for-profit and private sectors at both the practicum and internship levels. (Examples of our practica and internship sites are listed to the right.) Students have engaged in a wide variety of experiences in the context of their applied training components and have been able to provide services to organizations which include program evaluations, comprehensive literature reviews, policy developments, conducting focus groups and needs assessments, community education, and feasibility studies. The Practicum The practicum typically takes place in the second year of the M.A. degree and consists of 100 hours to be completed in a local field setting such as a business organization, community organization (including grassroots ones), school/college, or government agency. The Internship The internship is intended to be broader in scope than the practicum (i.e., more varied in content, involving a wider range of skills, a longer time commitment) and should be designed to accent existing skills (e.g., knowledge of interventions) and develop additional skills (e.g., consultation skills). The internship is to be initiated after completion of the practicum and following completion of all course requirements and dissertation proposal.
